#1 Bike through Copenhagen

Copenhagen is one of the most bike friendly cities in Europe, with a cycling rate that exceeds 50%.  It’s an easy way to explore this diverse city. There are many routes you can take during your visit and we recommend starting your journey at Nyhavn Harbor for some iconic views of the Danish capital.

No visit to Copenhagen is complete without sampling smørrebrød (Danish open faced sandwiches) and drinking a glass of Carlsberg at one of its historic breweries.

If you’re feeling adventurous, make sure not to miss taking part in “hygge” which translates as “cozy”. Hygge can be best described as an experience that involves intimate conversations with friends, warm drinks like tea or coffee while enjoying some good company – it’s all about getting cosy!

#2 Ski down one of Europe’s snowiest mountains

Europe’s highest mountain peak (Mount Blanc) is also its snowiest. With over 40 feet of powder every year, it’s the perfect place to enjoy the most extreme activities on a European vacation.

The start of the ski season is in December but each year there are more opportunities for winter fun as it gets warmer. The most active time on a European vacation is usually February or March because that’s when all the slopes have been groomed making for fast and easy skiing/boarding – perfect conditions!

We recommend staying at an Alpine resort like Val Thorens which has some of Europe’s most extensive snowmaking capabilities so you can enjoy these snowy activities even if it doesn’t get cold enough outside.

#3 Go hot air ballooning in Cappadocia

Cappadocia European Bucket List
Photo by Carmian from Getty Images

A once in a lifetime European bucket list item and one of the most favorite activities for thrill seekers and nature lovers alike in Cappadocia is hot air ballooning!

The landscape in Cappadocia looks like something out of a storybook with fairy chimneys, volcanic rock formations, and villages that look as though they’re straight from an Ottoman empire painting. This region has been inhabited since 900 BC but it wasn’t until 1988 when this area was opened up to tourism by the Turkish government – let’s keep it a secret spot just between us!

#4 Take a cheese-tasting tour along the French countryside

The French take their cheese very seriously, and much like wine tasting, it’s an opportunity to explore new flavors while learning the history behind them!

One way to do this is through a Cheese Tour. Not only will they show you who makes what type of cheeses, how they’re made and aged, but also teach you how to pair them with wines or liquors along the countryside.

#5 Visit Germany’s Frankfurt Book Fair

The Frankfurt Book Fair has been going on for nearly 500 years. It is the world’s largest trade fair for books. It happens every October and it has over 700 exhibitors from more than 100 countries around the globe!

It’s especially popular among international publishers, literary agents, translators, writers and illustrators – one of those potential big breaks into a new country or region can happen here!

Frankfurt also offers extensive cultural opportunities like art galleries, museums, cinemas as well as shopping galore at this event in Germany. If you’re an aspiring writer yourself then don’t miss out on visiting Cafe Buchmesse to meet other creatives while enjoying some brunch before touring the rest of the exhibits.

#6 Ice fish with the locals in Lapland

Lapland is the best place on Earth to ice fish. In what seems like a winter wonderland, you’ll be able to witness first-hand the effects of climate change and learn about sustainable fishing practices while catching your own dinner for that evening!

Don’t worry if you’ve never ice fished before – some nice locals will show you how!

You’ll want to be sure to dress appropriately for the weather – it’s one of those things that you only get once in a lifetime so make sure you’re prepared!

#7 Hike Aletsch Glacier in Switzerland

European Bucket List Aletsch Switzerland

The Aletsch Glacier is the longest glacier in Europe and one of its most popular attractions. It’s also a UNESCO World Heritage Site!

Hiking the Aletsch Glacier is a once in a lifetime experience and an incredible European bucket list item. It’s not for the faint of heart and would be an intermediate level challenge, but it’ll be worth every step when you get to see those majestic views up close!

#8 Scuba dive in Greece’s crystal clear water

There are thousands of shipwrecks all over the Hellenic sea floor just waiting to be explored. If you’re a scuba diver and want the experience of exploring sunken shipwrecks, then don’t miss out on scuba diving in Greece!

If you love history and diving this would be the perfect opportunity to dive down into these wrecks while exploring all their secrets. This is one way to explore that side of Europe in depth and learn about what life was like back when many of these ships sank centuries ago.

Scuba diving is an activity suitable for most levels because there are so many different sites available across Greece’s coastlines – it’s not just limited to professionals. It also makes for some really cool underwater pictures too!

#9 Try to find Bigfoot while hiking the mountain trails of Romania

This one might seem out there, but did you know that there have been over 3000 reported sightings of Bigfoot in Romania? That’s a pretty high number considering how small the country is. I don’t think it would hurt to try and see if any locals believe in this legend – who knows what could happen on a Romania hiking trip?

This would also make for an excellent opportunity to explore the mountain ranges of this Eastern European country that not too many people know about. You never know what you might find out there!

Romania is home to incredibly diverse cultures with rich histories, so it’s no surprise they’ve had sightings like these over the centuries. This truly makes them one-of-a-kind and something special in Europe’s vast landscape.

#10 Try an authentic “Moules Frites” dinner in Belgium

Belgium is one of the most well-known countries in Europe for their delicious “Moules Frites” dish. These mussels are served with french fries and a broth made from white wine, butter, garlic, salt and pepper!

This meal was originally created by Belgian fishermen who would come back after long days at sea to enjoy this seafood soup which did not require any chewing or an extensive knowledge about cooking – it’s just straight up tasty!

If you’re looking for something new to try on your next European holiday that will satisfy all your cravings then make sure you check out what Belgium has to offer. Who knows when they might discontinue their famous French fry appetizer? You can’t miss out on trying this!

#11 Walk around Rome’s ruins

Rome's ruins European Bucket List
Photo by Nicola Forenza from Getty Images

Rome contains some of the most beautiful historical structures in Europe. You can explore the ruins of Ancient Rome and learn about what life was like many hundreds, if not thousands of years ago.

There are countless sites in this city to visit including places such as The Colosseum (a must see!), The Vatican City, Saint Peter’s Square and so much more! Make sure you take your time exploring every nook and cranny because there is something for everyone here.

Rome is a great example of how history has shaped the world we know today – you’ll want to walk around these historic structures while trying to imagine what it would have been like living back then or even visiting during that time period! These ancient buildings will be unsurpassable by anything else you’ve seen before.

#12 Race cars with Formula 1 instructors in Budapest

Hungary’s capital has been a major player in the Formula One world since 1986 when it hosted the first Grand Prix of Hungary. Today, Budapest is still home to some of the most iconic F-One racers and instructors – so much so that you can book yourself on a driving experience with them!

This will be perfect for anyone who wants to learn race car tricks or techniques from professionals rather than trying to do it themselves. You’ll get an inside look into how these cars work and what makes them different than other types like your typical sedan.

#13 Have an authentic Italian pizza experience

There’s nothing like the taste of a real Italian pizza.

The ingredients are fresh and local, the toppings are top notch (including everything from meatballs to arugula!), and you’ll be amazed by how thin these crusts get with just a small amount of cooking. Italians have been perfecting this dish for hundreds of years – make sure your visit isn’t over until you’ve had one!

You can find pizza all across Italy so it’s not hard to track down but I recommend starting in Naples where there is a specific type that has been deemed “the best” by some experts. This city will give you an authentic experience unlike anything else on offer here in Europe because food holds such importance within their culture. And who doesn’t love delicious Italian cuisine?

#14 Take part in the world’s largest siesta

In Spain, everything shuts down between 2 pm and 4 pm every day – whether it’s businesses, restaurants or even traffic. In fact, it’s called a “siesta” because everyone goes home to nap! After this long nap time (which is actually really necessary) people stay up much later and it’s time to party!

This may sound crazy to some but it’s the perfect way to live in Spain because that type of lifestyle is ingrained into their culture. If you want an authentic experience then this siesta-and-party cycle should be one of your top priorities during your visit!

#15 Ride a gondola like they do in Venice

European Bucket List Gondola riding through venice
Photo by Hitesh Choudhary from Pexels

There’s not much of a better place to ride around on a gondola than in the canals of Venice.

If you’re looking for romance, this is the place to do it. There’s something so intimate and personal about sitting side-by-side with your loved one on a boat as they row up and down these canals taking in all the sights around them.

Venice has been popularized by countless movies that showcase their gondolas but what makes visiting here much more special than seeing just any other movie set is being able to actually experience this romantic ride yourself! You’ll be blown away by how beautiful it really looks like from below those bridges – plus there are added bonuses at night when everyone lights up their homes with candles and stringed lights. Take pictures of everything because no photo will ever capture exactly how pretty Venice truly is.

#16 Attend Oktoberfest in Munich

Oktoberfest is a festival that originated in Munich and it’s been gaining popularity every year.

It all starts on the last Saturday before October (October 12th this year) when there will be an opening ceremony – which you’re more than welcome to attend! Afterward, people celebrate by drinking lots of beer and eating tons of German food like pretzels or bratwurst with sauerkraut.

If you’re looking for an authentic German experience then this is your chance to have it. Plus, Oktoberfest goes until the first Sunday in October so don’t worry about missing out on something important if you only have a limited amount of time during that week!

It’s celebrated all over the world but make sure to go where it originated – Munich Germany. There are specific traditions and customs they do here which no other festival can match up with because of how long they’ve been doing them for (since 1894). The atmosphere will be electric with people drinking beer from giant glasses while wearing their lederhosen or dirndl dresses – plus there’ll be traditional music playing as well depending on what day of celebration you go on.

#17 Visit a haunted castle in Ireland

Leap Castle in Ireland is a place that’s been known to be haunted for centuries. It was originally built in the 16th century and is said to have been the centre of bloodshed and brutal atrocities.

It may sound like an interesting tourist attraction but it also has its share of paranormal activity as well because the owners and visitors say they can see ghosts or hear voices coming from inside this castle. There are ways you can make contact with spirits at Leap Castle so I recommend visiting if you’re looking for an adventure!

In fact, there are plenty of other castles all over Europe that would classify under “haunted” – these buildings are steeped deep within history because they’ve been around much longer than others which makes them more susceptible to this type of activity.

#18 Climb to the top of La Sagrada Familia (the world’s tallest church)

This cathedral has been under construction for over 100 years and is still not finished to this day!

That may sound like a bad thing but it’s actually one of the reasons why you should visit La Sagrada Familia because it’ll make your trip more authentic than if you went somewhere that was already built and done! You’re also able to go inside which I highly recommend since there are so many details in each nook, cranny, or corner that will leave your jaw open from astonishment.

The most iconic part about climbing the stairs up towards its peak is when you can see all those colorful stained-glass windows (over 12000!) below while hearing the beautiful choir singing – making for an unforgettable experience. It’s one of the most popular tourist destinations in Barcelona.

#19 Visit the largest flower garden in Europe near near Keukenhof, Netherlands

This is a place that’s been around since its official opening in 1949 and still stands today as it was originally built.

They have over 7 million different types of flowers that bloom throughout the year with their most popular time being in May when everything is in full-bloom. It’s a great place to go if you like beautiful scenery and want to learn more about what plants are native (or not) for your home country.

Plus, they offer free seed packets to all their visitors!

#20 Take a private yacht tour along Croatia

European Bucket List Two women on a yacht in Croatia

This sounds like a pretty fun way to tour the Croatian coast, right! If you’re looking for a more unique experience then this is it – you can get a private yacht to take you on your tour which means there’s not anyone else around and the views will be spectacular.

It’ll also give you more time for activities like kayaking, swimming in beautiful bays, or just taking photos of all the landmarks that are visible from where they’re located by the coastline!

#21 Climb the Belfry Tower in Bruges

This is the tallest bell tower in all of Bruges and offers visitors a 360 degree view of everything there.  You must climb the 366 steps of the narrow, winding staircase to witness this view though!

As soon as you reach the top and look out over Bruges, your jaw will drop at how beautiful this place is! You can see all sorts of different landmarks like churches, bridges, buildings – even if they’re not that close to each other yet because of its location on the edge of town.

Plus, there’s more than just natural beauty up here in addition to architecture for instance: some people say they’ve seen paranormal activity such as shadows moving around or cold spots where no one should be standing (yet someone is). Spooky!

#22 Take a trip down the river Danube

This river is the second longest in Europe and goes through eight different countries!

It’s also one of the most famous water routes for boat trips so you’ll have lots to choose from when it comes to which tour provider is best. You can book a private charter if you want an exclusive experience just for your party but there are enough boats going down this route at any given time where there won’t be many other tourists on them besides yours – making it feel more like a personal trip than anything else.

The Danube will take you past castles, old churches, as well as gorgeous landscapes – each one giving off a different vibe or sense of emotion with its natural surroundings.

#23 Do some shopping at Tallinn Christmas Market, Estonia

This is a market that takes place every year from November through to December and has been hailed as “one of the best Christmas markets in Europe” by many.

It’s not just for shopping though: they also have tons of food, entertainment, and other shops too! There are over 200 stands at this market which means you’ll be able to find whatever it is your heart desires during these winter months – whether it be an ornament or souvenirs from Estonia itself such as traditional clothing or tasty cuisine like black pudding with cranberry sauce (yum!).

The best time to visit is during the weekends in December. when there are lots of people around. You can get into the holiday spirit by walking around listening to festive music nearby where all sorts of different vendors are selling their goods!

#24 Take a ride on the London Eye

Also known as the Millennium Wheel, this is the tallest observation wheel in Europe and provides people with a 360 degree view of London.

You can see all sorts of landmarks from up here like Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, St Paul’s Cathedral – not to mention places off in the distance that you wouldn’t be able to see otherwise!

If you’re looking for some more entertainment then they have Laser Light Shows at night where there are lasers projected onto buildings or monuments along the River Thames.

#25 Ride the Funivia dell’Etna Cable Car in Sicily

This is an adrenaline-pumping ride which takes visitors up to the summit of Mount Etna.

It’s a very popular attraction in Europe and also one that has been voted as “Best Cable Car Ride in Southern Italy” for many years now! It will take you through beautiful landscapes where there are small villages, lush green forests with plenty of wildlife, and even snow on some occasions due to it being located at such high altitude.

There’s more than just scenic views though – people say they’ve seen fireballs shooting out from the volcano or even geothermal activity like rocks getting super hot right before your eyes without any warning whatsoever! Definitely one for an adrenaline junkie’s bucket list.

#26 Visit a thermal bath in Budapest

For the ultimate in relaxation, you should stop by a thermal bath in Budapest.

You can start off your visit with an hour-long scrub down where they use various types of natural oils to massage and cleanse the skin – making for one heck of a relaxing experience! You’ll get all that good dirt and oil taken off while also getting some help when it comes to any aches or soreness from traveling.

Then, after soaking in this soothing environment, you move onto the steam room which helps open up pores allowing for sweat (and toxins) to come out before following it up with another round of water soaks as well as more scrubs plus tea tree baths if desired. This is seriously like heaven on earth right here!

#27 Explore Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh Castle is one of the most popular attractions in Scotland and has played a big role throughout Edinburgh’s history.

It was first established way back during Roman times, but then rebuilt by King David I in the 12th century as he wanted to create an English fortress on Scottish soil. It served many purposes over the years like being used for residences and military uses – not to mention it even acted as a prison too.

These days visitors can go around exploring parts of this historic castle such as entering into rooms with tapestries where paintings depict stories from its past, explore dungeons that still have cobwebs hanging off the walls, and see the impressive Crown Jewels that are on display.

#28 Visit one of Ireland’s most remote Islands

Achill Island European Bucket List
Photo by Luisa2506 from Getty Images

Ireland is full of beautiful places and some of the most stunning scenery in Europe. Achill Island off the coast of Mayo is one of the most remote spots on the island and only accessible by boat.

The best time to visit is during the summer months as the weather in Ireland during other months can be very unpredictable. There are various events and festivals during the summer months too.

It’s a great way to experience Ireland while also getting in touch with their roots at the same time…plus who doesn’t want to explore this amazing part of Western Europe?

#29 Walk along Europe’s longest pedestrian bridges

The Arouca Bridge in Portugal isn’t just Europe’s longest pedestrian bridges, but it’s the longest in the world!

It connects two towns on either side of Arouca River and has a total length of over 2000 meters. It used to be an old railway line but was converted into a pedestrian walkway. It’s a prime spot for people to enjoy the amazing views of the river on either side.

This is one landmark you can’t miss from your European bucket list while in Portugal.

#30 Attend the Festival d’Avignon, France

This festival has been running since 1947, so needless to say, it draws in all kinds of entertainment enthusiasts from around the world.

You can expect to see a lot of experimental theatre, dance performances, concerts, and music. It’s been the starting point for many different artists who have gone on to establish themselves in their respective fields like Alain Resnais (Spanish director) or Maurice Béjart (French choreographer).

It also often features performers from other countries around the world , so there’s plenty to keep you entertained. It takes place every year in July and shouldn’t be missed on your European bucket list!

#31 Bathe in hot springs in Greenland

Greenland is a destination that seems like it has everything. It’s home to so many different landscapes from mountains and forests, expansive glaciers, and even hot springs.

If you’re looking to try something out of the ordinary, why not take part in their customs and visit one or all of their hot springs? It’s said that they have some of the cleanest waters on earth due to them coming from glaciers – so this makes for an excellent way to relax after exploring Greenland’s natural beauty.

It can be a great way to spend some time with oneself in one of the most remote parts of Europe without having much else as far as activities go – which is kind of what makes it such a special place! You don’t have any distractions or worries while you’re there because everything seems really secluded and calm.

#32 Go camping in Luxembourg

Camping in Luxembourg European Bucket List
Photo by Studio1One from Getty Images Pro

Luxembourg may be one of the smallest countries in Europe but they have a lot to offer tourists.

It has plenty of recreational activities like biking on their many trails or enjoying nature by canoeing down the Alzette River, and there’s also an abundance of beautiful castles that are located throughout Luxembourg – not to mention it even contains some artists’ colonies if you want to explore more cultural aspects.

Camping is one of the best options while visiting this small country. You can choose from various campsites all across Luxembourg for your needs whether you’re looking for shorter trips or longer stays! It makes sense why so many people do camp here because with its great climate, unlimited green space, and endless amount of things to see…it can really be the perfect place for a weekend getaway.

#33 Stay in a tree house in Bratislava

You may have never heard of this city before. But it’s the capital and largest city in Slovakia, which is a country that borders with Austria, Hungary, Ukraine, Croatia…and plenty more!

There are many things for travelers to see here whether they’re interested in museums or architecture. It also has some incredible restaurants if you want something different than what you had on your trip up until now because Bratislava does specialize in hearty food like goulash, a type of soup from Hungary.

One of my favourite accommodation types has always been tree houses. And Bratislava has some of the best views from theirs! You can find these scattered throughout the entire country but they’re especially towards the outskirts where you’ll find plenty more forest space and less people which makes for some great hiking opportunities.

You just might have to get up high enough so that you can overlook all of Bratislava with its amazing views – it really does offer something different than most other cities out there!

#34 Search for the Northern Lights in Lapland

What could be more of a Scandinavian experience than visiting Lapland?

If you’re interested in seeing the Northern Lights, this is definitely one of your best options for experiencing these natural phenomena! It’s said that they have some of the most incredible ones out there…so it might just warrant an entire trip up to see them.

You’ll also get to do other activities like snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, dog-sledding or reindeer herding so if you want something different and exciting, then Lapland should be on top of your list.

#35 Road trip through Italy

Italy is a country that’s known for its incredible sights, and this includes the natural wonders.

You can find mountains, beaches and plenty of other natural landscapes. But there’s also a lot of history as well – which is something that makes Italy such an influential country to this day because it has so much preserved from hundreds of years ago.

Of course, Italians are known for their great food and drinks too! There’s always miles worth of pasta or pizza…but you’ll be able to try anything like gelato in Rome or one the best wines coming out from Tuscan vineyards.

Road trips have never been more exciting than when they take place on these roads with incredible scenery all around! It might not seem like the most obvious tourist destination for travelers, but it’s one of those places that has so much to offer.

#36 Explore the Paris Catacombs

Paris Catacombs European Bucket List

If you’re looking for an eerie place that’s not too far from the city, then Paris is home to some of the most famous catacombs. If you’re going to explore the Catacombs of Paris, I would suggest going on a ghost tour. There are guided walking tours and night-time candlelit tours where guides share stories about (and sometimes show)

Parading under the City of Lights, a maze-like collection of tunnels sits buried beneath Paris’s streets. This labyrinth consists of approximately 250 miles of passages that are home to several million skeletons all amassed from about 6 million people who were once buried here. During the 18th century, overcrowding gave way to mass exhumation and relocation, transforming this underground graveyard into what is now the Catacombs.

#37 Stay in an ice hotel in Sweden

Definitely something for your European bucket list would be to stay in the coolest hotel in Europe – literally!

Icehotel in Jukkasjarvi, Sweden is built each year using blocks of ice from Torne River/Lake. The hotel is completed with the help of local artists and carpenters – who sculpt the rooms to perfection! To add to the experience, there’s an ice bar and a sauna made out of ice. Bring a coat or two – you’re in Sweden!

It’s said that sleeping on snow has been known to help people sleep better which could come in handy before hitting the road again.

#38 Visit a Disney castle in Germany

Neuschwanstein castle in the town of Fussen is a must see for any Disney fans. It is a beautiful Bavarian building that was built in the 19th century.

The castle is said to be the inspiration for Walt Disney’s Cinderella Castle at Disneyland in Anaheim, California.

This castle was once owned by King Ludwig II of Bavaria and it still stands today complete with its original furniture inside. The interior of this building has been used as a setting in many TV productions, movies and video games – making it an even more popular tourist attraction!

#39 Zipline over the Bovec Valley in Slovenia

There are also theories as to why it was built such as religion or astronomical observatories
